Action of nisin and high pH on growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella sp. in pure culture and in the meat of land crab (Ucides cordatus) BJM
Grisi,Teresa Cristina S. de Lima; Gorlach-Lira,Krystyna.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of nisin and high pH to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella sp. in broth culture and when inoculated into meat of land crab. In pure cultures, the growth of S. aureus was bly inhibited by nisin and the growth of Salmonella sp. was inhibited by nisin-EDTA (20 mM). The inhibition of S. aureus lasted for eight hours and Salmonella sp. growth was inhibited throughout the experiment (24 h). The high pH (pH 10.0 and 11.0 with NaHCO3-NaOH buffer) was very effective for in vitro inhibition of S. aureus and Salmonella sp. Nisin and high pH, when applied to the contaminated meat, did not yield the same effect. Nisin was not effective in preventing growth of both pathogens in the crab meat,...

Antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolated from poultry carcasses in Dakar (Senegal) BJM
Bada-Alambedji,Rianatou; Fofana,Aïssatou; Seydi,Malang; Akakpo,Ayayi Justin.
This study was undertaken to estimate the antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolated from raw chicken. From November 2003 to April 2004 a total of 120 chicken carcasses were collected from 36 randomly selected sale points (supermarkets, traditional market, poultry slaughter house, flocks) in the urban and periurban zones of Dakar, Sénégal, and examined for the presence of Salmonella. Salmonella was isolated from 75 (62.5%) of the examined samples. Out of the 90 Salmonella isolates obtained, twenty one serotypes were identified, from which the most prevalent were S. Kentuchy 30%, S. Muenster (13.3%), S. Brancaster (8.8%), S. Enteritidis and S. Hadar (6.6%). All Salmonella isolates were tested for their susceptibility to 16 selected antimicrobial agents...

Assessment of serological response of chickens to Salmonella Gallinarum and Salmonella Pullorum by Elisa Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Oliveira,GH de; Berchieri Júnior,Â; Montassier,HJ; Fernandes,AC.
This study was done to assess an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect chicken serological response against Salmonella enterica serotypes Gallinarum and Pullorum. The assays have used soluble bacterial proteins of Salmonella Gallinarum strain 9 (AgSG) as detecting antigen and peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase conjugates. According to the results, the antigen, sera and conjugate concentrations were optimized. In addition, the assay using alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase conjugates was helpful to distinguish positive serological reaction to serotypes Gallinarum and Pullorum from Enteritidis.

Chicken serologic response to Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium assessed by Elisa Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Oliveira,GH; Berchieri Jr,A; Montassier,HJ.
This study evaluated two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in the detection of chicken serologic response against Salmonella enterica sorotype Typhimurium. The assays have used as detecting antigen the soluble bacterial proteins of a non-flagellated strain of Salmonella Typhimurium (AgTM), and antibody conjugated to peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase. According to the results, optimal dilutions of antigen (concentration 5.49 mg/mL) and serum samples in both assays were 1:20,000 and 1:1,000, respectively. In such conditions, the ELISA/AgTM was able to detect serological response to Salmonella Typhimurium. Cross-reactions to Salmonella serotypes Gallinarum and Pullorum were seen, but not with other serotypes such as Enteritidis.

Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pereira,M.L.; Gastelois,M.C.A.; Bastos,E.M.A.F.; Caiaffa,W.T.; Faleiro,E.S.C..
